The Hortensia Herrero Foundation is preparing an immersive art installation by the Israeli designer and architect Ron Arad that will open its doors …
He is a renowned designer and architect who was born in Tel Aviv in 1951. After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Jerusalem, he moved to England where he studied architecture. He rose to prominence in the 1980s when, while searching for ironwork for a sculpture, he discovered the seats from a Rover car and turned them into the first recycled armchair, the iconic Rover chair. This serendipitous find was the beginning of a trajectory that has seen him become one of the most famous designers on the planet.
In 1989, he founded his own studio together with Caroline Thorman and, a few years later, presented the flexible Bookworm bookcase, one of his best-known pieces that is now produced on a commercial scale by Kartell. He has been head of the Design Department at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London and a professor at the Hochschule in Vienna. In 2011 he was awarded the medal for excellence in design at London Design Week and in 2013 he was elected an Honorary Academician at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
He has exhibited in museums such as MOMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as designing pieces for companies including VITRA, Kartell, Moroso, Driade, Fiam, Alessi, Cappellini, WMF, Magis and Cassine.
Mat Collishaw has created two works for the exhibition Ron Arad 720º: Transformer and Sordid Earth.
The first piece, created especially for the exhibition, takes the viewer on a journey through the Fallas festival in Valencia, the festival of fire. The images show a firework display in the background, which draws the viewer’s attention with its explosions of colour against the night sky. Out of the smoke and ashes of this cremà emerge beautiful flowers and butterflies fluttering their flaming wings in the darkness, in a duel between death and beauty.
In Sordid Earth he shows a tropical cornucopia dominated by images of plants and flowers which, behind their apparent attractiveness, hide a subtext in which the artist speaks of the survival instinct and the struggle by nature to defend itself against the crimes committed against it. The piece reminds us of the ephemeral nature of beauty while referring to the way we try to contain, control, manipulate and exploit nature.
Collishaw has participated in exhibitions in prestigious museums and institutions including the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Rudolfinum Gallery in Prague, the Botanical Garden in Madrid, Villa Borghese in Rome, the Bass Museum in Miami and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He currently lives in London.
Painter, designer and comic book artist born in Valencia in 1950. Mariscal works in all types of media and artistic disciplines: graphic design, landscape design, painting, sculpture, illustration, animation, product design, interior design, multimedia. His main speciality is drawing, thus he brings an artistic approach to any commission. He uses a universal and timeless language that adds value, uniqueness and emotion to his projects.
His fearlessness is reflected in the major challenges he has taken on, from the mascot for the Barcelona Olympic Games to the detailed design of a luxury hotel, illustrations for New Yorker covers or the creation of the animated film Chico & Rita with Fernando Trueba, which won a Goya award and was nominated for a best animated film Oscar.
Colours Are Always Beautiful is the name of the piece Javier Mariscal has created for the exhibition. In the projection, typographic shapes are followed by animated characters who dance to the rhythm of Niño Josele’s flamenco guitar. The video includes different characters created by Mariscal such as Cobi -the mascot for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992- and other members of the ‘Cobi Troupe’.
Mariscal has been awarded the “National Design Award”, is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and has exhibited at centres including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the London Design Museum in London and La Pedrera.
Greenaway & Greenaway was established in 2009 by brothers Jude and Jolyon, who share a similar attitude and approach to their artistic creations, leading to an organic production process that results in a strong style. This collaborative process allows them to forge dynamic films for spaces that are a hybrid of video, animation and sound.
The artists Greenaway & Greenaway have devised RH360º, a film that fractures images and projects them anew onto the huge curtain, creating an unsettling sense of displacement in space.
They have made music videos for groups such as Pet Shop Boys and The Who.
